What usually causes a garage door to stop working

A garage door is a counterbalanced system. Springs carry the weight of the door, cables and drums transfer that lift to the bottom corners, rollers guide the door through the tracks, and the opener only supplies the small push needed to start it moving. When one part fails, the others are forced to do work they were not built for.

Most repair calls come down to one of five causes:

  • A broken spring. The most common reason a door suddenly will not lift. See spring repair.
  • An opener fault. Stripped gears, a failed circuit board, or travel limits that have drifted. See opener repair.
  • Safety sensors. Misaligned or dirty photo eyes make the door reverse when closing. See sensor repair.
  • Cables and rollers. A frayed cable or seized roller makes the door bind or hang unevenly. See cable repair and roller replacement.
  • Track problems. A bent track or a door that has come out of it. See off track repair.

How we diagnose the problem

We start by disconnecting the opener and checking the door by hand. A properly balanced door should lift smoothly and stay put when stopped halfway. If it drops or shoots up, the springs are the issue, and no opener adjustment will fix it.

From there we inspect springs, cables, drums, rollers, hinges, tracks and the opener, and test the safety reversal. You get an explanation of what failed, what we recommend, and the price before any work starts.

Garage door repair cost in Austin

Cost depends on which part has failed. The two most common repairs are priced as follows:

ServiceTypical price
Most common repairs$125–$350
Basic spring replacement, single spring$400–$650
Basic spring replacement, double$650–$950
Opener repair$125–$350
New opener$650–$1,800+

For cables, rollers, sensors and track work, the technician gives you the exact price in writing after diagnosing the door and before starting. Financing options are available. See spring repair and opener repair for more detail.

When to stop using the door

Stop operating the door and call if a spring has broken, a cable is hanging loose, the door is crooked in the opening, or a roller has come out of the track. Running the opener in any of these conditions can pull the door further out of alignment and turn a single repair into several. Do not try to lift a door with a broken spring by yourself; a two car door can weigh well over 150 pounds.

Can you repair my garage door the same day?

Yes. We offer same day service and can arrive within 30–90 minutes. Call (512) 273-3798 and we will confirm the arrival time for your address.

Should I repair my garage door or replace it?

Most problems are repairable, because the parts that fail (springs, cables, rollers, openers) are separate from the door panels. Replacement makes more sense when panels are rusted through, cracked or badly bent, or when the door is an older uninsulated model and you want better insulation or a different look. We will give you both options when it is a close call.

Why does my garage door open by itself or reverse when closing?

A door that reverses while closing almost always points to the safety sensors near the floor, or to close force and travel settings on the opener. A door that opens with no command is usually a stuck wall button, a failing circuit board, or a remote signal issue.

Do you work on all brands?

We service the major residential door and opener brands commonly found in Austin homes, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and Craftsman openers. If you have something unusual, tell us the brand and model when you call.
