How insulated doors are built
- Single layer. One sheet of steel, no insulation. Light and inexpensive, and easily dented.
- Double layer. Steel with a layer of polystyrene foam and a vinyl or thin backing.
- Triple layer. Foam sandwiched between two steel skins. The strongest and quietest construction.
Polystyrene and polyurethane
Polystyrene is a rigid foam board fitted into the door section. Polyurethane is injected as a liquid and expands to fill the whole cavity, bonding to the steel. For the same thickness, polyurethane gives a higher R-value and a stiffer door.
R-value measures resistance to heat flow; a higher number means better insulation. Manufacturers publish the R-value for each model, so doors can be compared directly.
Is it worth it in Austin?
It is most worthwhile when:
- The garage is attached, and especially when a room sits above or beside it
- The door faces west or south and takes the afternoon sun
- You use the garage as a workshop, gym or play space
- The garage is air conditioned or you plan to add a mini split
- Noise matters, either from the street or from the door itself
For a detached garage used only for parking, the comfort benefit is smaller, though the added strength and quiet operation still apply. Perimeter weather seals and a good bottom seal matter as much as the door’s R-value; we check and replace these during installation.

Insulated door FAQs
Will an insulated door cool my garage?
It will not cool the garage, but it slows heat gain through the door, so the space stays closer to the temperature it started the day at. The difference is most obvious on doors in direct afternoon sun.
Can I add insulation to my existing door?
Retrofit kits exist, but they add weight, which means the springs must be adjusted or replaced to keep the door balanced. A factory insulated door performs better and is properly balanced from the start.
Are insulated doors quieter?
Yes. The foam core damps vibration, so the door rattles less as it moves and blocks more outside noise.
