Signs your rollers are worn
- Squealing, grinding or rattling as the door moves
- The door shakes or jerks instead of gliding
- Rollers slide in the track without turning
- Wheels that are chipped, cracked or wobbling on the stem
- The door has become noticeably louder over time
Nylon and steel rollers
Nylon rollers with sealed bearings are the quiet choice. The nylon tire runs silently in the steel track, and the sealed bearing keeps dust out and lubricant in. They are our usual recommendation for attached garages.
Steel rollers are tough and suited to heavy doors, but they are louder and need periodic lubrication.
Many builder grade doors are fitted with basic rollers that have no bearing at all. These are usually the first part to wear out on a door from a production home.
What the service includes
- Replacing all rollers as a set so the door tracks evenly
- Inspecting hinges and replacing any that are cracked or elongated at the pivot
- Checking track alignment and tightening brackets
- Lubricating hinges, bearings and springs
- Testing door balance and opener safety reversal
Why the bottom rollers are different
The bottom rollers sit in brackets that are attached to the lift cables and held under spring tension. They cannot be removed safely without first releasing that tension. This is why roller replacement on a torsion spring door is best done by a technician, even though the upper rollers look simple.

Garage Door Roller Replacement FAQs
How often should rollers be replaced?
There is no fixed interval. Sealed bearing nylon rollers typically last many years; plain rollers without bearings wear much sooner. Replace them when they are noisy, wobbling or no longer turning freely.
Will new rollers make my door quieter?
Nearly always, if the old rollers were worn. For the quietest result, pair nylon rollers with a belt drive opener and a lubricated, balanced door.
Can I just lubricate noisy rollers?
Lubrication helps steel rollers with open bearings. It will not fix a roller with a worn bearing or a damaged wheel, and nylon tires should not be oiled.
