Signs it is time to replace
- Panels are cracked, rusted through, or badly dented
- The door sags or bows when open
- Replacement sections for your door are no longer made
- The door is uninsulated and the garage is uncomfortably hot
- Repairs are becoming frequent and costly
- The door has no modern safety features, such as pinch resistant panels
- You are updating the look of the house or preparing to sell
Repair or replace: how to decide
The moving parts of a garage door are all replaceable: springs, cables, rollers, hinges, tracks and the opener. A door with sound panels can be kept running for a very long time.
The panels are different. A single damaged section can sometimes be swapped, provided the manufacturer still produces that exact profile and colour. When several sections are damaged, when the steel has rusted along the bottom, or when a wood door has rotted, replacement costs less over time than chasing repairs.
Age alone is not a reason. A well kept door from the 1990s with good panels may only need new springs and rollers.
What you gain with a new door
- Appearance. The garage door often makes up a large share of a home’s street facing front.
- Comfort. Insulated doors reduce heat coming into the garage and into rooms next to it.
- Quiet. New rollers, hardware and an insulated door run far more quietly than a worn, hollow one.
- Safety. Current doors have pinch resistant section joints and tamper resistant bottom brackets.
The replacement process
Replacement follows the same steps as a new installation: measure, select, order, then a one day install that includes new tracks, springs and hardware and removal of the old door. See garage door installation for the details, and our style guide for ideas.

Garage Door Replacement FAQs
Do you offer financing?
Yes. Financing options are available. Ask when you call or during your estimate and we will go over them with you.
Can you replace just one panel?
Sometimes. It depends on whether the manufacturer still makes that panel. Even when it is available, a new section next to sun faded older ones may not match in colour.
How long do garage doors last?
A quality steel door that is maintained can last 20 years or more. Heavy sun exposure, impacts and lack of maintenance shorten that.
Do I need new tracks with a new door?
Yes. Tracks, springs and hardware are engineered for the specific door, and manufacturers require them to be installed together.
